The first USA Rugby camp was like a cattle call. I was one of 150 players invited from around the country. I felt that I had made a strong showing but did not expect to make the team. I was surprised when Coach Thompson invited me to play at the Cowtown tournament. I feel it was here that the coaches saw what I could do on the field and warranted an invite to the next camp. Coach Thompson told me later that he had not been impressed with me at the first camp but Coach Kwedar convinced Coach Thompson to take a second look at me and they invited me to the Cowtown Tourney because I was local and there would be no travel expense, so why not. At Cowtown, Coach Thompson was impressed enough with my gaming performance to warrant another opportunity. After that things just fell into place, I just went out and played each camp/game with everything I had.
The matches against Canada were exciting and frustrating. We had many chances to put the game away but did not capitalize in Canada's red zone. The speed and physicality of the game was different. It was much faster and much more physical than my high school or college club games.
Sam Houston Club Rugby is a very competitive RFC that plays against nationally ranked teams like Texas A&M and LSU but has struggled in recent years from lack of experience. We are a very tight nit group that loves the sport of Rugby and everything that goes with it. It is looking like we will have a good team next year because we will only lose 2 starters to graduation.
Playing for the Plano Wildcat football team for 3 years was a dream come true. I had watched them play since I was little because my grandparents bought me season tickets every year. I grew up wanting to be a Plano Wildcat. My junior year I was asked by a teammate, Conor Bertrand, to attend a Plano RFC practice because I had nothing better to do after football season. After going to the practice I knew I liked the sport but didn't know how much. It was not until we played our first game against Allen that I realized how much fun Rugby was and how similar it was to football. After that I was hooked, Plano Rugby was one of the best experiences of my life and I would encourage anyone that likes contact sports to try it out. The great thing about rugby is that you don't have to be 6'4 with 4.5 speed to be good. It just takes the desire and the will to take a hit.
Rugby and Football training went hand in hand. Football increased my size and strength while Rugby increased my endurance and stamina. In both sports you have to be a great tackler. One thing that I have always loved about rugby is that everyone can run the ball. As a defensive lineman I had always dreamed of picking up a loose ball and scoring a touchdown. While playing for the Plano rugby club I scored in every game I played except one.
